Not by Accident

Accident—n. an event that happens by chance or that is without apparent or deliberate cause.

ACCIDENTS HAPPEN all the time. Whether you accidentally forget something or you bump into someone. There are bigger accidents like car wrecks or someone falling and getting hurt that cause major damage, yet they are no one’s fault.

There is one thing though that will never be an accident. No one gets to Heaven by accident. Spending eternity with God isn’t something that just happens. In fact I would say that making it to Heaven is actually the opposite of an accident. It happens by first asking God to forgive you of your sins, repenting and turning away from those sins, believing that He is your Savior and Lord and asking Him to live in your heart. That is a deliberate choice!  There is more to it than that though; in fact that choice is just the beginning. I think sometimes we forget that. But even making an on-purpose choice to become a Christian doesn’t mean that for the rest of your life, you won’t have to make any more choices about serving Christ. Yes, even after getting saved you will not make it to Heaven by accident.

You have to make a choice everyday to serve Jesus! Every single second of every single day you have to choose Jesus. Sounds easy right? I mean why would you not want to choose Jesus?

But it’s not always easy.

It’s not easy when all your friends want to see a movie that you know is wrong. They all talk about it and how great it is. The sad part is some of them claim to be Christians, but they still are willing to fill their mind with filth. And you are left with a choice. Do you follow? Or do you choose Jesus?

It’s not easy when it’s Monday morning and as soon as you walk into the doors of school that one person who you just don’t get along with says some smart comment. What you want to do is say a smart comment right back or slap them. But what would Jesus want you to do? Are you going to choose Jesus?

It’s not easy when a singer you really like puts out a song full of inappropriate words. I mean you would never say that stuff! And you’re not really agreeing with it, you’re just listening to it, singing along with it, and buying it on Itunes. Not a big deal right? But what would Jesus say about it? Does He like you filling your brain with those lyrics? Are you going to choose Jesus?

You have to make a choice everyday to serve Jesus! Every single second of every single day you have to choose Jesus.

It’s not easy when a really funny youtuber makes inappropriate jokes. I mean they are hilarious! They have tons of subscribers and are rising quickly to the top. Also not everything they say is bad, it’s just every once in awhile they take God’s name in vain or defend gay marriage. A lot of kids from your church watch them anyway, so why not you? Would Jesus want you to subscribe to them? Would you be comfortable with Him watching their new video over your shoulder? Are you going to choose what Jesus wants?

Following Jesus is no accident. Following Jesus happens everyday with the little choices. If we aren’t careful, if we don’t purpose to follow Jesus, we will be making choices to not follow Him.

God gave us the Bible so we can know what’s right and what’s wrong. If something isn’t clear cut in scripture, we have direct access to the author of the Bible. Ask Him. Take some time to pray about that song that you really like but has somethings that don’t line up with what you believe. Tell Him about that person that you just can’t stand and have a hard time loving. Make a choice to talk to God and to read His word.

C.S Lewis said this about choices:

“Every time you make a choice you are turning the central part of you, the part of you that chooses, into something a little different than it was before. And taking your life as a whole, with all your innumerable choices, all your life long you are slowly turning this central thing into a heavenly creature or a hellish creature: either into a creature that is in harmony with God, and with other creatures, and with itself, or else into one that is in a state of war and hatred with God, and with its fellow creatures, and with itself. To be the one kind of creature is heaven: that is, it is joy and peace and knowledge and power. To be the other means madness, horror, idiocy, rage, impotence, and eternal loneliness. Each of us at each moment is progressing to the one state of the other.”

Wow! What kind of creature do you want to be? Where are your choices taking you? Just as you don’t go to Heaven by accident you don’t go to Hell by accident either. Josh McDowell said this…

“A lot of people say, well how can a loving God send anyone to hell? First of all God doesn’t send anyone to hell. If we go to hell, it’s by our own choice. But when somebody says to me, how can a loving God allow anyone to go to hell, I’ll turn around and say, ‘Well, how can a holy, just, and righteous God allow sin into His presence?’”

That’s some heavy stuff! But it’s so true! As teenagers, we need to realize our choices determine our destination. Then we need to set our sights on Heaven.

We live in a world that gives us things instantly. But making a good choice doesn’t always give us instant gratification. Sometimes the opposite happens. You might be ridiculed. You might not get to go do something that seems fun. But in the end, it will be worth it! We can make to it to Heaven, one good choice at a time!
